Fear Laced with Denial

Scrub up them cherry picked diamonds for tonight
the ones the like of which your mama never dreamt
take your trip up
to the starry neon flight
drive back drunk
every night
you are someone else

you’ve been playing the same songs
over and over
for a year
or more
and you can’t hear them
anymore
or remember
what they were for
and don’t I know
better than anyone

honey you were wrong
and no one like the sky aches
through empty hour infant morning
light everywhere
suddenly
all of your heart

suddenly all of my eyes
finds you out and you wonder
why I leave little mirrors
at the alter of a past regret
why the streets and the stairs and then the floor shakes
when you’re in between one place and another
and you take the anorexic trees for nature

but he’s playin a sad song in the tiny room
and there are words
that make you feel a certain way
and its not going to change
the reasons why you’ll come back
tomorrow
or why you came
the first time

and don’t I know how lonely
the moon is
how you just want it
to be what it was
and what it is
at once

but one door is the way out
and behind the other
is just fear
laced with denial.
